Speed Sensor on 2003 Elantra GLS.

They sell them without the ring, I had to redo it because I was in a hurry and didn't think to check. Luckly the axle isn't really that hard to get out.. he If its got the ring, that would have taken about a minute to verify btw, then good luck finding what happened. Hard to web diagnose that.

This is the passanger side of the tranny which has oil, the driver side is clean.

I jacked up the car and crawled to get the best view. So is the wrong axle or no?

passenger axle, wheel side is where the ring is. You're at the wrong end of the axle.

also, can anybody tell where the leak is? Looks like its where the axle meets the tranny, but not sure...

I had to brighten it up on my computer first. There is a gear in the hub, you may not be able to see it well...
...I really need to buy a flashlight

Yep, I see it. To be honest that would have been a much easier fix than if its a wiring problem. I assume the stupid CEL for that speed sensor is still pissed off?

yea, the CEL is still on. Is this why? Can you explain what you see exactly?

The end of the axle has the geared ring the sensor reads. There is going to be about a zero chance to e-diagnose that one now.

also it can read pas 5k on the tachometer can rev past 5k with no problem.

I wanted to thank everyone for this thread. I just had the wrong axle installed, but this led me to the reason I was getting a Speed Sensor Error.
I was a little miffed at Autozone for not knowing the 03 Elantra requires the Ring Gear, even if the car does not have ABS Brakes.

They tried to make out that I should have known the difference. I had to by a second axle and now it is going to cost me another $100. for installation.

At least I know what the problem is now.

One question, is it possible to buy just the ring gear and install it on the non-ABS axle?

They sell ring gears for other applications like casting machines and CNC lathes, but I'm not sure if you can get this ring gear and press it in.

much easier to get axle with the ring already installed, and i have not seen it for sale by itself

I can't figure out how to start a thread on the forum. Basically I have an 03 elantra gls automatic. the codes it is throwing are: p0455 (leak) p1523, p0733 and p0732. The guy at advance told me that it would be the speed sensor causing the majority of those. I wanted some more info before I just go throwing money into the car. As far as i understand is that there are two speed sensors- one at the wheel and one on the transmission under the air box.

My car's speedo is working fine. The only problem i have been feeling is 2nd and third geer feel a bit off which those codes are for. I just want to make sure I change the right one. I want to guess its the one at the passenger wheel but wanted someone elses opinion. Usually when i come to a stop its very sluggish at getting up and going. the guy at the auto parts says its the speed sensor. any help would be great. Thank you.
