Default Exhaust Flex Pipe 2004 Elantra GLS - need advice thx

Exhaust Flex Pipe is leaking, replacement recommended. Found this out because CEL codes p0139 and p2626 say that the Bank 1 sensors 1 and 2 indicate this problem. This info comes from the dealership after the computer reading.

My question is, if I get the flex pipe replaced/or welded, will that make the CEL light go away? Or do I need to replace the Bank one oxygen sensors as well? I wouldn't want to buy and install new sensors if it's not necessary.

I am new to the forum and any help or guidance is much appreciated.

    Thanks

Welcome to EXD! enjoy your stay.....
i just had the flex pipe replaced on my sonata it sounded like a tank but did not throw a cel it was $200 at a exhaust shop. I would say get the flex pipe done clear the code if it comes back then its the 02 sensor not just the flex pipe.

Is the flex pipe blown through? Mine slowly deteriorated since the beginning of the year until mid-March- I noticed the exhaust slowly getting louder and louder accompanied by a "pffft" leak air sound. One of the braids was blown out leaving a quarter-sized hole, which I drove around with for quite a while without having any CELs or any other drivability issues other than noise.

Usually if the flex pipe blows and you do get a CEL, it's only the 2nd sensor that throws something. That you're seeing the 1st sensor throw a code may indicate something other than a flex pipe leak.

The car drives and sounds normal. I did not notice anything different while driving it. The dealership folks were less than honest in their assessment (they fabricated some problems and told me it would be $$$$$$$ to fix,) so I'm looking for other opinions. Is there a good method for checking the flex pipe that I can do on my own? I'm not usually a DIYer, but if it's something obvious then I would be able to see it.

You'd have to crawl under the car or get it up on the lift the visually inspect the pipe. Cutting out and welding in a new flex pipe will between $100 and $200.

^ yup i pulled mine up on ramps and could see the whole in the flex pipe.
call around to exhaust shops for prices should be around $200 or less depending on the shop.

UPDATE: I had the exhaust flex pipe welded on at a local muffler place for $175, check engine light cleared. After driving away for a few minutes, the CEL came back on. Drove straight to Advanced Auto Parts and had them hook it up to the computer to give a reading. this time only one sensor came on, the

Bank 1 Sensor 1 from code P2626, which is upstream of the CC. The flex pipe repair solved the downstream sensor 2 issue from before

New Question -- does anybody know if the 2004 GLS Standard model is SULEV or ULEV for emissions? I found conflicting information on this. I have the standard automatic transmission. Is it best to replace the sensor, or poke around to see what the cause of its appearing is?

Thanks again for all the help

    Non-Cali 2004 is ULEV.
