Default So, how would you buff this out?

    Ta da. My new bumper.

Apparently someone scraped me while I was in town one day and I didn't notice it until I was at the Hyundai dealership earlier asking about getting new windshield fluid nozzles. My best chance of getting this out (for now) is..? Paint scratch repair pen?

I'm going to call the place doing my dent repair and see if they can give me some pointers, maybe repairing it with the pen, then detailing it? Idk, I'm just curious what could have caused that damage. Only because of the pattern.. and the weird shape it's in.

Also, sorry for me being in the way of the straight on photo, that was the best angle. I'll get some more later.

slap some duct tape on it and call it a day!

upper part should buff out, lower looks like its going to be a lot more work. if you run you fingernail over it is it deep you can tell by how far you nail goes into it.

Haha, duct tape solves everything. The top part can be buffed out? Awesome. And well, the bottom part is deep enough that I can probably dig my nail under and chip the paint up. So, touch-up pen time?

Weird shape is due to a plastic bumper flexing when it hit you. It looks like you mainly have their paint on your car, and your paint is untouched underneath. That's just how it appears. First determine if the scratch is protruding, or imprinted. Imprinted might require repainting. You'll need to determine if it's past the clear before deciding on what to do. If it is protruding, then it's their paint on your car. Imprinted, your paint is scratched.

Don't use paint pens, it will be very obvious.

Wash the area like normal, use generous pressure with your fingers using your skin/finger prints like an ultra-fine sandpaper while washing after you ran over the area with your wash rag (micro fiber of course). Keep your fingers wet with the car wash. Use light pressure with your fingernails to get stubborn areas. Make sure you're hands are extremely clean before doing this.

You should be able to get most off this way. After the wash if there is still some left, wet sand lightly with 2000 grit paper. Keep a even cross pattern. Every area you are sanding should get equal passes. Might want to tape off your taillight. It will get a little hazy. You might be able to feel the groves of the scratch. Try to sand until it's flat/smooth. But keep checking to make sure you don't sand past the clear. When your done sanding, wash the area & wax with your favorite wax. Not spray wax, or wash+wax, use real wax.

I've had good luck on a few vehicles getting swapped-paint off with a claybar.

Thanks. I'll try to do what you said. I can't wash the whole car right now, so I'll work on that one spot later today when I get a chance.

If the above doesn't work, I'll be taking a clay bar to it. I'd do it anyways, but I don't have any clay at the moment.

I'm nervous to sand and paint something when I'm not a pro, or at least have the correct materials.

    Haha, but thanks.

So a little update, I was able to get the long scrapes off relatively easily. The gouges are there, obviously. And the paint is bubbling up. Also, the worst part: I have stress cracks going down my bumper in a huge arc. I'm beyond mad. I went around and was able to fine a primed bumper for $140 even shipped to my door. Only issue is that it's primed, so i'd have to pay for someone to paint it, unless I start the matte blacking mega early.

I'll have to get photos if those in a little while, it's too bright out as of now.

That sounds like you will need paint. In the gouges, is the paint dull or shiny behind that?

The paint? It's dull, it looks gray like primer. I'll get photos tomorrow. It's just a pain in the *** to deal with, really. I keep getting bad news about my car.

    Hahaha, you guys.

Anyways, here's the photos I was talking about.

I was able to get just about all of the paint off. I have a scratch or two, but they're not too noticeable.

And the stress cracks aren't too bad either. You can't see them until you actually look at/for them.
Here's them coming down the bumper.

But then you look closer and you see this mess.

    The full extension.

And here's the gouges and you can see the cracks coming down to that area too.

Is the best idea to get a new bumper? How would one go about fixing the stress cracks?

The paint is harder than the flexible plastic underneath. Which has caused the paint to crack when it was forced to bend. Your bumper should be fine. It just needs repainting. Non-pro painters flaws will show in plastic. Plastic requires a flex agent in the paint. Ever seen a car driving around and it looks like the paint is pealing off the bumper, giant spots of paint missing? Also, a non-pro will try to paint over those cracks. And sanding plastic too much will cause low spots. Make sure you get a good painter and it will look good as new. I'd take the bumper off and take it to them. Then you yourself install it. When you make the job easy for them, they will be less likely to get frustrated and will do a better job.

I'll probably end up doing that later on. I was just freaking out more about the scrape. The stress cracks can wait for a bit I believe. I'll just have to find a place and get a quote. Thanks for your help!

A guy down the street from me has a nice custom Tacoma with a ding about the size of a baseball in the side of bed. Has this sticker on it and it makes me lol every time I see it. I hope he never fixes it.
