Re: Does 2004 Elantra have a transmission filter?
Thank you for your quick responding, it looks like it's inside the trans oil pan? where did you get the parts? filter and gasket? at the dealer? my car has 60,000 miles on it, i'm worry if it's too late to replace the trans filter?
Thank you all
(Just edit it)
Hi, I'm absolutely respect your opinion and help, and I just read this article and I confused:
Q: 2004 Hyundai Elantra. Trying to find the transmission filter.Where is it located?
A: Doesn't have one. Same with the 2005. At one time, there must have been plans for one as there is a non-machined location on the casing of the transmission housing, right on the top. Hyundai specifies a fluid change every 30K miles. At this interval, a filter is not needed.
Don't be confused here, the reason the ENGINE has to use an oil filter is because the engine is dealing with higher temperatures and combustion byproducts. The transmission operates at a significantly lower temperature, and no combustion.
Be aware that your transmission uses a specific formulation of transmission fluid, available at the dealer. It is a bit more expensive than off the shelf fluid like Dextron, but you are only changing it every 30K, so the cost over time is minimal.
I totally understand your question as some of the Hyundai literature showed to replace the filter. But on the Hyundai internal service site, there is no filter shown nor indicated. Probably one of those things where it was just easier to change the oil more frequently than add the cost of the filter and internal plumbing.
I found this article, I don't understand why the steps #6 need for? and Hyundai is different from Honda, it's simply to remove the plug to drain the fluid.
How to Change the Transmission Fluid in a 2004 Elantra
Instructions
1
Purchase three quarts of transmission fluid from your local Hyundai dealer. Other fluids can potentially harm your transmission system, so it is essential that you use only the Hyundai-specified fluid for your Elantra.
2
Drive your Elantra for at least 10 minutes before beginning the transmission fluid replacement. This allows the fluid to heat up and drain more easily than if it were at air temperature.
Engage your Elantra's emergency brake to prevent potential hazards as you work on and under the hood of your car.
4
Turn your car off so to prevent accidental sparking or injury.
5
Raise your Elantra's front end using a car jack. Jack stands are recommended for extra support, and the stands should be locked by their security bar. You may want to wiggle your car before getting under it to be sure that the vehicle is being adequately supported by the stands.
6
Open your hood and disconnect the tube that connects the transmission and radiator. This can be accomplished by gently unclamping the tube with your adjustable wrench. Exercise caution in this step, since the transmission fluid will be extremely hot.
7
Place the line into a drain pan for safety purposes, as small amounts of fluid will seep from the tube during the transmission-fluid changing procedure.
8
Get under your Elantra and find the metal plate that is fastened by several bolts, securing the transmission drain pan to the transmission itself.
9
Remove the bolts from the drain pan using an 8 mm hex socket, allowing the drain pan to catch any extra fluid that falls from the transmission area during this step.
10
Wipe the drain pan clean using your dry shop rag. Do not moisten the shop rag, as water or cleaners could damage the transmission.
11
Replace the drain pan, re-bolting it with the hex socket. Do not over-tighten the bolts, since this could damage or even cut through the drain pan.
12
Remove the jack stands by releasing the safety bar and pulling the stands out from under your vehicle.
13
Lower the car jack cautiously, as your transmission-fluid line is still sitting open with the drip pan under the hood of your car.
14
Remove the black cap from the transmission-fluid port, which is located next to the dipstick.
15
Position your funnel into the entry of the fill port and slowly begin pouring each quart of transmission fluid until the fluid has reached the fill line. If you are unable to see the fill line, the dipstick can be used to check the fluid level. The Elantra's fill capacity is slightly less than three quarts, so the amount needed will depend on how much fluid was left in the container after the drain-pan process.
16
Close the hood of the vehicle and remember to change your transmission fluid again in 25,000 to 35,000 miles.

Re: Does 2004 Elantra have a transmission filter?
Note that kxlylmz's 2004 XD2 is in Turkey. It's possible that in some different markets, the auto tranny had a filter. I'd go to your dealer with your VIN code, they would probably be able to tell you for sure.
As for the How To article, they've added the extra step of disconnecting the fluid line running to the rad; I'm not really sure why. I guess it's so that when you drop the transmission oil pan you don't get so much spilling out. On my 2001 Elantra there is a drain bolt, but they might have removed it for the XD2. Just jack up the car and check it out for yourself.. if there's no drain bolt on the tranny, you need to drop the pan to get at the filter or change the fluid. Just make sure when you're taking the pan off that you leave two bolts on loosely before tapping it with a soft-face hammer- this will prevent the pan dropping on you and covering you in tranny fluid!

Re: Does 2004 Elantra have a transmission filter?
I just did it today, it's easy like the oil change, yet my car has a drain plug, I used 24mm socket to remove the bolt to drain the trans fluid. Refilled it up to 5 qrts. First I put up first 4 qrts then driving around for 10 minutes then checked the level, added one more quart.
Thank you all
