its either leaking from the plug or the filter. Not much else would leak out like that.

i agree oem filter and 10w30 is what i use all year round.

to answer the ASE cert...all you have to do is pass a test. It does NOT make you a good tech. Even with Hyundai just because you are a certain level, does not mean too much. UNLESS you are Platinum certified then you are tested for three days...book stuff and diagnosing.

    ** UPDATE **

Front crankshaft seal blown. Gave shop parts for timing belt, water pump, and crankshaft seal I was told I would get the car back on Friday (7/6). That night I was told that they couldn't release the car to me because it was still leaking oil. New seal purchased (OEM) and valve cover gasket warrantied (they replaced that in march). I get a call yesterday that says "while we were testing the new seal, the timing belt came off and some valves got bent."

I am supposedly getting my car back today. I will keep everyone posted

Yeah, timing belt coming off is basically the end of the engine. Good luck!

Just got a copy of my repair order. Here is an excerpt:

Timing belt derailed upon leak detection of factory crank seal causing 2 intake valves to bend.
    Diagnose engine noise
    22321-23000 Head Bolt QTY 8
    22321-23010 Head Bolt QTY 2
    20920-23C20 Head Gasket Set
Repair PCV threads in valve cover
    22211-23600 Intake Valve QTY 2

Got the phone call today that said "we had your car idle for 45 minutes and it was running great. we took it for a road test and when we came back it was puking oil"

Another weekend without my car...I don't even know what to do anymore

    Wow...

    That place really sucks...

Those parts are most likely not the only ones that are messed up, the valves maybe smacked the piston and might have caused metal shavings to get in the combustion chamber.
They ran over my car, quite literally.

I guess you are really lucky if you can actually get away with just replacing intake valves. Timing belt de-railing while engine running is a complete engine overhaul to me. Anyways if your engine is okay with just replacing some head bolts and valves it is great

Today they are ripping off the bottom of the engine. There were 2 half-moon shaped pieces of metal approximately 2 inches long found in the oil pan. :'(

I doubt you will have the car back for quite a while. Not good.

doing some more research here (Google leads me back here every time!) I found this thread:

    http://www.elantraxd.com/forums/show...+against+block

so...if i wasn't a subsequent owner or if i didn't have 156,000 miles on my car I could take it in to the dealership and they would fix it up with no more problems.

but I'm not...so I don't even know what my options are anymore

    **UPDATE**

I just heard from Hyundai Motor America corporate office. There is nothing they can do to assist because there is no warranty. Also even if there were a recall on this issue, they would still not fix it because there is no warranty. I have no words.

I think the repair shop should do this for free. They are the ones who de-railed your timing belt.
