Default Can I install cruise control in my car?

Hello, I'm new member of this community. My car is 2002 Elantra and it
doesn't have cruise control. I want to install it as genuine cruise of elantra.
Can I install cruise control with genuine hyundai cruise parts? If it is possible,
I also want to know the parts that I must buy. Thank you.

It would be possible, but probably not worth it. You would need the steering wheel switch, cruise control module, cruise control cable, and any wiring harnesses to hook it up. I don't know if there's anything else you would need, but it probably wouldn't be worth it to do...

You can install cruise control. It's available as a dealer add-on I believe for vehicles that didn't come with it factory installed. Lot cheaper as a factory option. Not sure about the XD but most vehicles the cruise control kit is $150-200 & then about another $150 or so to get it installed. Only worth it if you don't want to get rid of your car & are going to be doing LOTS of highway driving. If your highway commute is under an hour each way per day I probably wouldn't consider it. If you're driving a few hours per day on the highway then I certainly would.

I'd suggest if you're consider adding cruise is to find out what parts you need from Hyundai, then find a totaled Elantra in a junkyard that has all the stuff and scavenge it.

There's not too much to the cruise setup -- the harness might already be there but you'll definitely need the underhood controller unit and controller-throttle body cable as well as the steering wheel switch.

When I bought my base GLS I had the dealer install cruise as part of the sale. I thought the dealer would install OEM cruise in the car. Instead, they sent it to a local shop to have aftermarket cruise installed At first I was pretty dissapointed... I wanted it to look OEM. But I have to say that the cruise in this car (it's a 5-spd BTW) is absolutely the BEST cruise I have ever used. As long as you set it above 70, it will hold dead-on on all but the steepest hills....

So... don't fear aftermarket cruise, but I certainly understand if you want the stock look.... I wish I had it....

Hi i have a 2004 Elantra(aussie) and tried to get factory cruise installed
but found out that if you do not have it installed in the factory
then there is no wiring already in the steering wheel or anywhere else to
    just plug the parts into.

i work at a car audio place and i ordered aftermarket cruise from one
of our suppliers and installed it myself. the controlls are mounted on
the wheel and it uses the horn wire to send the signals to the cruise
    controll module.

this is the best cruise i have ever used and all up it cost me about
    [AUD]350[/AUD]

My car member page is: http://www.elantraxd.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4516

    The following Photos are:

Pic 1= Steering wheel with the controlls mounted to it

Pic 2= Close up of Controlls

Pic 3= Actuator mounted under the bonnet on right hand side

Pic 4= Throttle linkage to the motor

Nice aftermarket unit... looks almost stock.

Yeah, if the harness isn't there for the factory cruise I agree that an aftermarket unit would be your best bet. It'd be a major pain if you had to change the harness or contacts in the steering column to accomodate the factory cruise unit.

I did that too. Mine was is a "stick" type of cruise thing-a-bob. You have to be a contortionist to see the stick. I have had to learn to operate by feel. OMG...and don't push the clutch in before you tap the brake to disengage...I was disappointed too. But I love cruise. Cost was $200 installed.

Huh... the aftermarket cruise units don't always disengage when you push in the clutch? The XD factory cruise cuts out when you use the clutch. There should be a microswitch added that triggers to kill the cruise when the clutch is installed -- it's probably an extra-cost option on the aftermarket cruise control systems specifically for manual transmission cars.

That's a good thing to know.

Mine doesn't disengage when clutching (have to brake first). Every now and then I forget and send the RPM revving way up.

Yellow Elantra, do you know the manufacturer of your cruise control kit? It looks pretty good for an aftermarket one.

I have installed a clutch swich with my cruise, so i dont have the over rev problem.

My cruise came from auscruise http://www.auscruise.com.au/ or http://www.autron.com.au/

    Specific page: http://www.autron.com.au/newweb/index1280.htm

this cruise is not just set for australian cars, is has an auto diaganostic mode that senses the speed pulses and sets the cruise module to your car

i can see no reason why this would not work for any type of car in any country

    Hi,

New to the fun of DYI in the car (except for the near 20 mp3 players my family has asked me to install......irrelevant) looking to put an Aftermarket Cruise Control kit into my "04 Elantra (Auto Transmission) and just wondering how hard it is and an approximate idea of costs for a decent kit.

FYI I'm an Aussie, so preferably something I can get here without having to pay heaps for shipping

    Thanks, Cam
