Default Having problems getting OBD Scanner to work...

Hello, I have a Auto Enginuety pc-based scantool that connects to the OBD-II port. I found the port underneith the driverside area (pretty much directly down from the steering wheel, near the clutch peddle, mounted to the plastic dash). My problem is that when I try to connect using the software it doesn't work... it locates the correct com port, gets a connection between the pc and the device, but it can never get a connection between the device and the vehicle. It says to have the car ignition to the on position which I did, but I have no idea what could be wrong. One of my buddies used it on his car the otherday and it worked fine, so I know its not the scanner. Anyone know how I can get this to work?
    -Thanks
    -Matt

    the car should be running.

. that is if you want to read the sensors in " real time " ...

I have the same problem. But it is worse because it happened at an inspection station while being inspected. Apparently the computer could not read my EEC so I was not able to be tested.

They told me they had to do some research to figure out the mess. The mechanic e-mailed me a few days later stating that some times the EEC goes into a transmission mode and does not read the engine mode. He says that it is a random thing and I should come back and he thinks it will work. He thinks he should have tried more?

    Any ideas?

The ODBII scanner must be ISO compliant, and the ignition turned to the ON posistion, not necessarily need to be running.

When you get your car inspected in this state you have it done with a special machine. They make the service station buy a new one every few years... It is ISO compliant and all the other stuff. The ignition key was on, still it did not read...

I wasn't talking to you Hondo, this wasn't your thread. I was talking to the guy with the PC based ODB II scanner that started the thread.

I wasn't looking at the dates, I just read the first post of the thread and answered the question. I didn't relize you had opened a thread up from last year asking a question to your issue which is different then a PC based ODB II scanner. I didn't even see another thread his problem was answered since there are usually 150 + posts a day to read through.

Yea she is stock. The only upgrade I have is that little ECT button. I hope the mechanic was right. Going back tomorrow and seeing if the second try is the charm.

    Thanks for the help.

Wifes Elantra failed emissions yesterday due to them not being able to communicate with the ODBII, where did this end up? i.e. What was the issue?
