Default left turn signal blinks 2x as fast as normal

Just noticed today that when my head lights are on my left turn signal dosen't work and when my lights are off it blinks twice as fast as it should. My right turn signal seems to be working properly... also, although I haven't driven at night to check it out... my bright light indicator is on any time I have my headlights on and will only go off if I turn my headlights off.

Sound like a wire crossed somewhere or a problem anyone has run into?

Sounds like a defective multi-function switch to me. Dealer time.

I had the same problem.... My foglights were blinking!!!!! Make sure all the connections to your left headlight is on properly. if that doesn't help you have a ground. You'll have to get that checked out.

usually a fast blinking means that a bulb is out (or it used to on older cars)

^^^ That's what I thought too, except when he mentioned his problems with his headlights, and brights. All of those fuctions are on the multifunction switch... those have a history of going bad, dating back to the Model-T. I think there's been a handful of people here who have had to replace them on their Elantras.

did you check the blinker fluid, I think you should change it. the dealer probly has to check your multi-switch it could be defective wires

Check all of your bulbs first to see if any of them are burned out or loose. If any are, replace them. Then try putting on the flashers and see if all four flash normally (with and without the headlights on, then with and without the parking lights on). If that works normally, then try your turn signals again, with no marker lights, with the parking lights, and with the headlights and see if it's fixed. If that doesn't work, post another reply to this thread and let us know the outcome.

That should have nothing to do with the fact he can only drive with his brights on... it's the multi-function switch.

Anybody want to bet me money against that?

Hyunelan -- I'll bet you. You Paypal me $5 it's a problem with an improperly installed bulb/wrong bulb or miswired headlight / relay / fuse issue. If it's the Multifunction switch, I pay you $5. If it's something else, we both keep our $5.

Whadda you say? That is, as long as "gambling" isn't against the rules...

    PM me if you're interested.

    Back on topic:
Shadow5606 -- also check the fuse box(es) to see if something's blown out.

I agree with hyunelan2... EVERY issue he describes has one thing in common.... they are all connected to the multifunction switch....

obviously, you should check fuses, bulbs, etc before plopping down the cash for that switch 'cause I bet it's not a $5 part.....

oh, update... although the high beam indicator is on I actually have no headlights... and I've noticed that "sometimes" my left turn signal will work about 1/2 as slow as it should... then sometimes not at all... then sometimes 2x as fast... so yeah... lots of electrical gremlins... I'll post here when i take it in what it turned out to be so any bets can be settled... lol

Shadow5606: Weird. I agree it must be a gremlin in the wiring somewhere. Is the car still under warranty or did you pass the 50K mark?

Just out of curiousity... have you had your dash apart before this started happening? For a while I would get a sometimes working - sometimes not, right turn signal. It turned out the clip wasn't fully snapped into the hazard button - and that fixed that.

This won't fix all your problems, but there may be more than one cause for what's going on.

nope, I've been a lazy beeatch and haven't taken it to a shop. Plus I was out of town for the last 4 days on my motorcycle.

Oh, btw, I'm out of warranty (2nd owner) and I haven't had my dash apart but after I let Circuit City install my HU I did notice that my dash clock won't respond to any ammount of button pushing.... maybe that's related too but I kinda doubt it...

Fixed last night -- it was a ground issue

Ohhhh, come on now!!! why'd you have to go and spoil it for me!! I was going to make the announcement.

Like Gonzo (my neighbor) said... there was a little tab w/ a bunch of wires going into it right below the battery on the left side if you're facing the car. The tab has a bolt through it and into the frame... the bolt was loose and the wires weren't grounded, hence the electrical gremlins.

I'll give Gonzo props for figuring it out though, he's the electrical Jesus!!

damn, since it was a ground issue nobody wins the bet...
