I agree with ilan, the 1600 is a pretty low end pioneer. If you don't have a cd player yet and need a cheap one, then go for it. Otherwise, I don't see the need to upgrade the cd player that came with the car.

My stock CD player (Canadian model) is a Clarion. After 2 and 1/2 years it's starting to not read my CD's (Originals and CD-R's). I've cleaned it and still having troubles. Makes me want to go back to a brand I know I can trust.

My friend who bought his Elantra 2 weeks after mine was having the same trouble after 1 and 1/2 years with his stock Clarion player.

Error code is 6, which Clarion says "the cd is upside down" I thought it was a funny description especially when the CD is in correctly. The next troubleshooting step they added was replace the unit.

Yeah, I agree, save your money. Don't buy it just because it's new, wait and save some money and get something that you really want. Another few $ and you can get a CD/MP3 player. Also, check out www.crutchfield.com and look at some of the other ones that are out. Ebay is good once you find one that you like. I saved like $80 buying mine off of Ebay instead of Crutchfield.

Pioneer is great, but that is a pretty lower end model. It has the basic features if that is enough to satisfy you, albeit a little boring. It's a decent all around deck for it's target area of entry level. I'm not sure if it has the capability to read burnt CD's - something you would want. You might wanna look into something that has MP3 capability too and go a little higher up the ladder. If you are gonna be upgrading the rest of the speakers in your car as well, you'll prolly wanna get one a little better than this one.

Pioneer is a great manufacturer, but I do agree that player looks a little blah. Checking out Crutchfield is a great idea, they have a lot of nice cd players.

^^Yeah on my last car I bought a cd player and did not switch out the speakers, once I did it sounded soo much better.

The 1600 is okay. I prefer volume knobs as opposed to push buttons.
The display is fairly small, and I think it is sort of ugly. It plays discs well and sounds decent though.
I'd pony up for something a bit better, depending on how much you care.
An Alpine 9821 is probably the best bare-bones deck there is IMO.
A Pioneer 3600 would get you a HPF/LPF, flip face, better controls, and remote. (Which is capable of being used with Pioneer's steering wheel remote, which is actually pretty nice).
I've had a 650, and currently an 8600 and loved them both.
Since you're learning still, I'd wait, look at every viable deck.
At that point you'll have a little more money, likely.

I have last years ver of that one, and I like it alot. It is the low end but sounds great and preforms it duties very well. One thing I love about it is the color of the lights, they match the stock green perfect and since I have blue indiglo guages it goes with them too.

plays CD-rs fine, in fact that is all I play in it, keep the originals at home.

I work for Hyundai in Canada, and ever since they are using Clarions decks. we have nothing but problems. Clarion decks are SHIEAT!

Alpine IMO is the best aftermarket deck you can get, if you want to get into higher ends then Nakamichi and Eclipse's are awesome too.

if anyone thinks that pioneer looks "boring", then my nakamichi must look "comatose":

why would anyone want a complicated looking deck? that goes against all ergonomic rules. but don't ever mistake quality for complexity. these are two very different things my friends.

Pioneer makes some good head units... but I'd take a look at some of the nicer units with MP3 capability.

For example the 7600MP (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/product/detail/0,,2076_4039_63891888,00.html) or if you're looking for something cheaper, the 4600MP (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/product/detail/0,,2076_4039_50410536,00.html).

And there are good prices on these here (http://www.savinglots.com/caraudio2.asp?manu=Pioneer&subcat=CD%20Players).

Definately..... I have a JVC that plays MP3 cd's and I love it. Put multiple cds on one disk, or put over a hundred songs and make a mix cd that lasts for hours....

Great for roadtrips to XD meets....
