: Side impact crash test

Is anyone concerned that the new 2009/2010 Elentra 4 dr sedan only received a Marginal score on the side impact crash test. How safe do you feel driving one knowing this?

Many people are driving cars that fail that test. The newest elantras pass that test.

In reality perhaps it is far more important to be a careful driver. But, even in old elantras, the test shows that the head protection is good, it is the torso that takes a bad hit.

Every time I drive, I know that the most important thing is to be a careful driver and I've learned how to be even more careful than I used to be. Namely it's really important not to be an aggressive driver.

Marginal from who? Is that IIHS or NTHSA? How do other cars in the same class fare?

Honestly to me it doesn't matter that much. You could get hit in the side or you could get hit with a meteor. And nothing is going to save you from that.

I talked a lot about this on the forum when I got my amazing 06 Tidalwave GLS.

Quite frankly I know someone who drives a Civic with 400,000 miles on it. And that car is also rated Poor in side impact from IIHS. Still, someone drove it 400,000 miles without a side impact accident.

I suppose we see some amazing safety technologies and amazing presentations on OEM websites, but, something like the Elantra XD2 is significantly safe if you use it in a safe fashion. The car is not all structurally bad, the offset test is good.

After I changed and flushed the original fluids in the car, my fuel economy finally didn't suck. This especially happened after I BG flushed the transmission at 30K; the change in fuel economy was very large.

I like the way the car drives, looks and am glad I bought it. Four and a half years after I bought it, Hyundai fixed and replaced my brake pedal light switch, that was cool.
