: What browser do you use to view EXD?

I want to know what browsers and versions people use?

Right now the site looks normal (well, normal besides being totally different) in Safari 4, FF 3.5, and Chrome. However I tried in IE6 at work and it looked horrible.

Can you guys answer the poll and provide some screenshots of what the current EXD looks like in your browser?

Here is a look at the IE6 ugliness (I just realized that the latest version is IE8 so hopefully it looks at least ok).

Cory, so it at least looks good (as compared to those IE6 shots I posted).

Matt, I believe that because it's a multiple choice poll, everyone that has voted has picked FF3.5, therefore it's 100% of the people that have taken the poll. That's my guess.

Work still requires us to use IE6. Silly Honda, not keeping up with the times. Go figure. At home it's IE7.

So work's IE6 must be why the site is so horrid.

Bob, can you see the links that Cory posted? Those show what it should look like. I agree, the IE6 looks absolutely disgusting.

Here's a look from Safari 4 at the main forum page.

I was reading online today about how IE6 is considered the worst browser of all time for a variety of reasons. One being that it doesn't adhere to a lot of web standards which is the reason the site looks like junk on it.

Now, because IE7 came out in late 2006, obviously there is no reason for any individual to still be using IE6. Some businesses/organizations are still using old XP boxes and servers (I guess) which is one reason they stay with IE6 (again, I guess).

EXD will not support a piece of junk browser that is over 8 years old. So basically if you are viewing EXD on IE6... upgrade it or deal with it!

I'm not sure who is still using I.E 6.1 but seriously, they may want to consider heading over to Windows update and fixing the problem because you're falling behind seriously.

^ I'd love to, but I can't. honduh's software for us is still based on IE6 and upgrading means it doesn't work. At all. Since it's kind of beneficial to my job and all, I can't.

UrbanerMezei
12-31-2009, 08:49 AM
That's really unfortunate.

Not to sound like a fan boy but have you tried another browser other than IE so you could keep up to date with your normal surfing and just use IE for the Honda stuff?

Firefox or Chrome maybe?

Bob, do you have a USB thumbdrive?

You can install Firefox or Chrome (or a newer version of IE) onto the thumb drive and run it from there..so you can still browse the forums on an update browser without installing anything on the work PC.

I find business lags majorly behind when it comes to IT.

I worked for a major law firm here in Ottawa doing some summer IT work and they're still using P3's with Windows 2000...

Bob (and anyone else unlucky enough to be stuck with IE6),

Looks like vBulletin it trying to sort out the IE6 issues so maybe you'll be able to have a better viewing experience from work in the coming weeks. I still don't think the site will look 100% the same as it does in more evolved browsers. We shall see.

That picture is from IE6, right? That's exactly how mine looks at work. Apparently IE6 has big problems with .png image files and their transparency. vB4 uses .png's frequently instead of .gif's like vB3 because if you can the change color schemes the .png's do not have to be changed. The other thing that IE6 can't handle is some of the CSS coding, apparently. That's why the front page looks like crap with IE6.

I highly doubt that IE6 will be supported going forward. It is not standards-compliant. It's like AM radio... dying a slow death. Thank goodness, it was a sloppy mess of a browser. It's too bad that the majority of companies are still suck in IE6, their update cycle hasn't come yet. Especially places like Bob's work, where the internet isn't very important.

UrbanerMezei
01-05-2010, 10:23 AM
IE 6.1 doesn't support .png, the format didn't exist in mainstream when the browser was created and there will never be an effort to implement it.

Hell Windows didn't even recognize .png as a valid wallpaper format until Windows 7 (it would work in Vista and not at all in XP).

.png was a major road block for most of the Microsoft software in the XP era.

You have no idea how WRONG you are. All of our ordering, catalogs and such are internet based. but they were all configured for IE6 and they cannot support IE8. My inventory checks, tire quotes, ordering , collision orders all come via the internet. But Honduh has not seen fit to keep up with technology in the parts/service/sales side of things. Only in the car.

Right, I work for a county government so we use the internet in every department. It's just too much money sometimes to make such a change throughout such a large organization.

IT roll outs are huge operations, there is a huge number of compatibility issues with past software that need to be considered.

It is not as simple as simply pressing the Windows Update button, a mistake could virtually cripple a department, and send a IT manager to the unemployment lines.

I completely agree. But i wish that IE8 had an IE6 compat mode, like 7 has XP mode.

I thought that these recent updates would at least make IE6 bearable and it does for the forum, but the front page still looks ugly.

Google announced in January that IE6 support would be dropped starting March 1 and so if Google doesn't support IE6 then I'm not too worried about it.
