Hey guys !!!

I am a new member - the g/f is looking for a car and it was impreza premium, but that was too much for too little

We stopped by a hyundai dealer and they had a nice elantra with heated seats and a roof for 18.6 w/ $2500 rebate - but it is gold so she wont drive it,but she liked it enough..

We checked out the touring and fell in love kinda,it has nice storage, feels nice, stops well, we didn't think it was too loud but we never took it past 3200rpm and it seemed peppy'sh

Is the hyundai engine & transmission reliable ? or is it drive it and let the warranty take care of ???? do many buy ext warranty?

I have read a few posts that suggest instead of the touring to think Kia forte 5- they seem the same car, same price, but the engine is aluminum block v. steel?

is it better to stay with tried and true or is the touring engine in need of improvement and the forte engine is the remedy ? is there a down side to aluminum block v. steel or advantage ?

If kia v. hyundai -is there brand distinction? I thought hyundai was maybe better quality, kia had those recalls, no?

thx

deal so far ...

2010 Elantra touring SE AT
$19,610
-$1500 rebate
-$1200 dealer $

2011 Elantra Touring SE AT
$21,030
-$500 rebate
-$1500 dealer $

it works out to be $1500 difference - we are leaning for the 11' - would you buy the 10'to save the $1500 ??

unless kia is better bet .. lol!

The 2010 and 2011 Elantra Touring are the same car, no significant changes in form or function. Save the extra $1500.

As for the engines in the Forte vs. the ET, the Forte is using a newer engine (Theta II). The Elantra Touring is using the same engine that Hyundai/Kia has used for the past decade. It is being phased-out, as the Theta gets more power and better mileage for the same displacement. The engine and transmission are not troublesome, so long as you keep with the scheduled maintenance and don't use the wrong fluids.

What he said.

Also the Kia 5-door is available with two engine choices, a 2.0l and a 2.4l. Also it's available with a newer 6 speed transmission rather than the old, outdated 4 speed automatic transmission that's in the Elantra Touring. I can't figure out whether this is the transmission that is built by Hyundai or not (press release says "This six-speed automatic transmission is a proprietary design for Kia Motors that was engineered and built specifically for Kia vehicles.") The new Hyundai 6 speed is made with fewer parts making it lighter and less easy to break (according to Hyundai).

The vehicles are ver comparable though and it might come down to which one she likes the looks of better.

Why do you think they are able to offer such a long warranty for such an inexpensive price?

she bought the ext warranty with the last sentra and it saved her from 2 fuel pump replacements that should have been recalled and it is helping her private party resale value .. do many people buy 'extra' protection if they plan on holding them for a few more yrs than the typical 4/5 - in the snow/salted roads rust belt of the North East

I see the 10 yr warranty but much of it is 3/36 like other makes ... and when they discuss engine, the warranty mentions covering certain engine components ... is the regular factory warranty good or does it need a extra 'buy in' for more teeth if something goes wrong ?

I think the standard warranty has worked well for me. And these newer Elantras are much better vehicles.

Also, check out this thread, love for the Elantra Touring (https://www.elantraxd.com/forums/showthread.php?41132-2011-Hyundai-Elantra-Touring-wins-best-car-for-the-money-award).
