Difference between MD and UD?

only1db and I (though mostly him) were doing some research into why some documentation online called the 2011 Elantra (sedan) the MD and other online documentation called it the UD.

After various scouring and emailing to our friends at Hyundai ThinkTank it seems like the answer is this:

MD refers to Korean manufactured 2011 Elantras (sedans).

UD refers to American manufactured 2011 Elantras (sedans).

There hasn't been any reasoning behind this but that's the answer. This leaves more questions than it answers I think. A couple would be "Is the Elantra built in any of the other Hyundai plants and if so do they also have different chassis/code names?" and "What are the pieces and parts of the vehicles stamped?"

Some of the 2011 owners might be able to help with the second question. On 2001-2006 Elantras the characters "XD" are found on lots of the individual components of the car (for instance on interior panels, engine pieces, etc). If anyone runs across and MD or UD mark can you share with us?

Thanks! And thanks to only1db for the detective work.

And as a reminder:

2001-2003 Elantras - XD
2004-2006 Elantras - XD2
2007-2010 Elantra Sedans - HD
2009-2011 Elantra Tourings - FD
2011 Elantra Sedans - MD/UD

Thank you for this information . Same car with parts just where it was assembled and made two different codes.
