Default Spring Cleanup Time - coming soon to my garage

My new Porter Cable 6" random orbital sander/polisher came in today

Today I ordered a 6-pack of Lake Country CCS pads, one in every color/strength. Plus a backing plate, some M102 and M202 compounds, and a box of new microfiber rags. The Santa Fe has only been machine polished once in the time I've had it - and it needs some TLC. My truck only has some light swirls from the winter to buff out. It's not yet a year old.

I'm off work Wednesday-Sunday the week after next, and plan on spending a lot of quality time in the garage making things shiny!

    Plans:

    Wash
    Claybar
Cut with M102 and an orange or yellow bad (Santa Fe only)
Polish the with M202 and green and black pads
Maybe a shot of Klasse AIO and Glaze
Put a top coat of synthetic paste wax

    I can't wait!

Use 2 applications of the Klasse AIO. Glaze over that.

I've used Klasse for a long time. The only bad thing about Klasse is it has no cutting power. It's good for shining things up, but doesn't really work well to remove any scratches or swirls.

Here is what 5 hours did to my wife's Santa Fe on Thursday.

First, I removed the rusted-out step-bars and put them at the curb. Then I washed everything with the pressure washer, including the underside.

Using a Porter Cable Random Orbital Sander/Polisher and Lake Country CSS pads:
one pass with Meguires M105 and a yellow pad, low speed
one pass with Meguires M205 and a green pad, medium speed
one-two passes with Meguires M205 and a black pad at high speed
I also polished the crap out of the headlights, and removed all the haze without any problems.

Pulled it in the street to dress the tires and snapped this photo. I forgot to put the roof-rack crossrails back on before I took this picture. There are still a few scrathes in it, but the swirls and the majority of the icky [technical term] is gone. It shines like new, and should be able to hold that for the <2 years I plan on still owning this.

By the way, if anyone is looking for compounding or polishing pads, this is about the best deal I could find [in stock] of the Lake Country CSS pads. 6-pack mix-n-match for $35. http://www.autodetailingsolutions.ne...inch-pads.html

Reconditioned Porter Cable 7346 DA for $100 You'll need a back plate for the CSS pads to work with this tool:

I had limited experience using pneumatic DAs from when I used to work in fleet maintenance on our trucks. This was my first go-around with using an electric for polishing, though I have used electric sanders for a long, long time on woodworking projects. It's not all that different.

Just make sure you have some material (compound/polish) on the pad, keep it moving, and don't turn the speed up too high - especially if you are using a coarse pad. You can typically do much more damage with a rotary polisher than a random-orbital.

    Looks good Mike.

And no, I couldn't imagine spending an hour washing/cleaning/waxing my car let alone 5.
