Considering hatchbacks got the “sport compact” market started, with legends like the Civic Si, Volkswagen GTi, Dodge Omni GLH-S, and even less well-known jewels like the Corolla FX16, it has been amazing to see the market mature and walk away from it as a genre. Combining useful utility (as utility is wont to be) and often exceptional aesthetics, the hatchback may be a quiet market, but the potential is always there—even for a schizophrenic US market.
