loosen drain plug

I am trying to change oil for the first time in my life. After reading through the instruction and relevant videos on youtube multiple times I felt pretty confident this afternoon and slid underneath my Elantra but for the life of me I couldn't wrench the drain plug loose! I used a 3/8" drive...
