My engine(2002 Elantra GLS) makes a strange rattle when first starting up. It only happens when it's idling around 1500RPMs. Once the engine heats up or I step on the gas the sound goes away. Brought it back to the dealer and they didn't find anything wrong with it. I was able to tape the sound and here is the sound clip:

It sounds like a ticking. Has anyone ever had the same problem? Is this normal?

Thanks for any help,
Pete

That's normal, I believe it's the result of the HLA's (hydraulic lash adjusters). Don't worry about it, most every car sounds odd until the engine reaches normal operating temperature.

Yup, got the same thing here. Goes right away when it warms up though. Even when accelerating I can hear it get a little louder until the engine is fully warmed up. Pretty normal...but it still bugs me.
