5th gear

Is there a taller 5th gear out there for us? I run 70mph on the interstate & that is 3000 rpm. If I had a taller 5th gear, I could run 2000 rpm & save a ton of gas.

I also searched for a swap with the 6 spd Tib box, but found nothing.

Thanks,

what size tires do you have? with stock tires I run close to 75mph in 5th.

70mph at 3k is about what i run at with stock size tires.

Ive looked into the avaliable gear ratios out there from other Hyundai's, and there are a few that would probably be compatible, but you're not going to drop it down to 2000rpm at 70mph.

I dont think anyone has actually confirmed that you can swap a gear out with another transmission, but im sure you can, trick is finding the right one
might be able to with some nissan transmission since nissan and hyundai used the same manufacturer for their trans's on the 6spd tibs.
You would hate my Jetta, 70 mph im close to 3800 rpm :(
I don't see why a 6spd swap wouldn't be possible, maybe mounts?
the 6spd is just closer ratio. the 6th gear i believe is actually shorter than the elantra, so you wouldnt be accomplishing what he wants.

i suspect nissan started running 6spd gear boxes so they could use less powerful engines, but still get them moving as fast as one with a bigger engine.

Well, maybe he'll get a lower rpm depding on the ration of the 6th?
no thats what im saying. The 6th gear on the tib is shorter than the elantra. Not by much, but it is.
Larger diameter tire. 205/60/15 on stock wheels or a 205/55/16 on 16" wheels. Adds abuot 5%-ish to the od of the tire. This DOES make the speedo read 5% too slow, but if you can do a little math in your head you can always be right on. Any bigger (had 205/60/16 for a week) and you're affecting the final drive too much in the wrong direction.
So could I just swap a 5th gear from a nissan or would I have to swap the entire transmission?
You'd have to disassemble both trans and HOPE it was made the same internally. Just because a company makes trans for multiple car makers does NOT make them interchangeable.

Again. . . buy a larger OD tire and be done.
Me not so smart, what is "larger OD"?
Outside Diameter. . . taller tire. Bigger than the 195/60's on the car.
the aisan (sp?) is the only tranny they have in common...no other.

sorry but for what its worth....the amount of work needed to do it...just slow down or deal.

29-30 avg while doing 85+
It looks like OD tires for me. I figured I would not be able to find a taller 5th gear, but it was worth a try. I drive all most all interstate, so I was looking for better gas mileage in any way I could get it. Especially since I am keeping this until it dies, which hopefully will be 12 more years.

Thanks for the input!
you could do it im sure. You can remove the 5th gear without pulling the trans.

google Hyundai gear ratios and youll find all the specs on the hyundai website. Go buy a taller 5th gear from like a Sonata or Sante Fe and see what happens. If it doesnt fit, take it back and try another. Innovation is a potential here.

Report back if it works/doesnt. If it does, great, some may follow. :D
^ SMACK....please sit down and be quite.

I have the same type of drive. I65, 865, 465 to keystone and two stoplights later I'm at work. That's why I went with teh 205/55's instead of the "correct height" 205/50 16's long ago. I keep in mind that an indicated 65 is closer to 70 ground speed and back off a little and get (got, having new issues)great gas mileage on my non-CVVT Beta.

what are you talking about?
From what I have heard so far, there isn't a taller 5th gear to be had from Hyundai. I don't want to crack open the trany and then find out there is no better 5th gear from any car company & lose my warranty for nothing.
Looks like OD tires for me. But when the warranty runs out, anything goes!
