Ive said in this thread that there are other high ratio 5th gears avaliable from hyundai.

My first guess to try would be the 5th gear from a tiburon with transmission code M5GF1. I think its actually the 5spd gear box in the V6 tib.

According to a little calculator I found, you should be turning 2974rpm at 70mph with a stock 5spd elantra. If that gear from the tib works, you should be down to about 2700rpm

what are you talking about?
you must remove the transmission to remove 5 gear....thats what i'm talking about.

the tib fifth gear in the beta tranny is just that a beta tranny....not a delta one used with the 2.7.

they are two totally different trannies.

again a difference of 300 rpms....would not be worth the hours of labor involved...nor worth giving up the warranty.

Says who? Hyundai service manual says you can remove the gear without pulling the transmission. You can do it on a number of other cars, whats so hard to believe that you cant?

And you're wrong still.

that transmission was used on a couple different platforms, with different engines and different ratios for each engine.

One more thing - that 300rpm allows your engine to run at 60mph speeds while the car is actually doing 70mph.

You're a fool if you dont think thats positive. Slower engine speed, less wear, better gas mileage, more economical all around. I put 40k miles on my car last year, most of it highway. I think it would have been well worth it to me.

sorry by you can not simply remove the rear cover and pull 5th gear out...my manual both online and paper say to remove the transmission....not to mention i have personally torn down and replaced those gears. the entire shaft needs to come out before you can start to pull gears off...nevermind press them back on!

i will not argue with you about the tranny...i will go and retrieve my TRAINING MANUALS FROM MY CLASS they are two different trannies for two differnt motors.

I never said the transmissions were the same. I never said the gears were compatible. I have a feeling they are similar enough to be used.

ESM that I have says different. If you claim you have to take it out, so be it.

Do you really think Hyundai is going to have their own technicians in properly-equipped shops working on transaxles still mounted in cars? Come now...

The cover will come off, and it would really surprise me if the gears wouldn't, with the thing mounted in the car.

I pulled the cover off 5th gear with the trans. still in my car, to get an idea of overall internal condition before I went nuts with the manual conversion.

When I get home, Ill check again to see which manual I looked at, but I know it said it could be done.

Plenty of other cars have swappable 5th gears, the internals of that transmission cant be that unique.

LOL of course they can be unique, why not?

It was a huge hinderance in WWI when we had trucks from, what, 150 manufacturers? Spare parts logistics was a nightmare because they don't HAVE to be the same without a standard.

lol derek you are a dumbass you can pull 5th with the trans in the car AND the car on the ground, you just have to pull the top cover and break loose the 2 36mm bolts on the top of the shafts and knock out a pin.

While that's intersting info and stuff, it has no relevance here. Hyundai used a different wiring harness for GLS, GT, Limited, auto and manuals. . .A different wiring harness for each model and type. That's a sure sign of stupidity on their part. What about SPIII fluids only?

Go to a taller tire and be done.

Just for the heck of it, take the XD AT model number and google it, Chrysler use this AT on a few of their car, still, they warraty those even though SPIII wasn't used.

Because a taller tire is only going to give you about a 2% reduction in engine speed. And you'll look goofy with oversized tires.

Been running 4% larger tires for 5 years. No one has thought the car looked goofy yet.
