5th gear

Is there a taller 5th gear out there for us? I run 70mph on the interstate & that is 3000 rpm. If I had a taller 5th gear, I could run 2000 rpm & save a ton of gas.

I also searched for a swap with the 6 spd Tib box, but found nothing.

Thanks,

Been running 4% larger tires for 5 years. No one has thought the car looked goofy yet.
there : I do!

ah! I'm sure you didn't thought I would say it!

*flame suit on ... in fact it's just a plain snow suit, but hey, it might work!!!*
so does anybody around here have a machinest friend they could take a factory 5th gear to and have them fab up a new one?
everyone w/ a 5-speed has a 5th gear... better question: who has a spare 5-speed laying about?

oversized tires: nobody will notice unless you are talking +2". It's like wearing a concealed handgun... you're self-conscious but nobody notices except the people who look for it all the time.
i have a spare input/output 5th gear laying around.

the question was more about a machinist friend; the possession of 5th gear is obvious. I know somebody but haven't talked to him in months. And yeah, my 5th gear is in use.

Side note: if you change the number of splines on the 5th gear, wouldn't you have to change the number of splines on both the input and output shaft gears so that the splines would line up or am I missing something.
you have to remake both the input and output to match. i have them laying around.

k that's what I thought.. any idea what the gears are made of? Sorry, trying to get as much info as I can so when I email this guy I can give him something to go off of other than, "can you make this?"
whatever gears are normally made out of. cast steel? i have no clue.
looks like "hardened steel" which if memory serves right is a heat treatment.
machined from a billet is my guess. Cast steel on something with a lot of shock loads... but then 5th gear tends to break with high HP levels so who knows. If you take it to a machinist they will probably know by looking at it.
Ill stick by my theory on the 5th gear from a V6 tib with a 5spd.

One of these days, ill head down to the dealer and see how much it would cost, and if i get brave, ill try it out.

But its not really doing you any good for this purpose.

Id rather have an accurate speedo anyways.
Last I heard, it was $70 for the gears when someone asked a dealership. No need to go in, just give the parts department a call.

Really? And what do you base your theory on? I run slower than indicated than I am actually traveling. That means lower engine rpms. Lower engine rpms at speed means less fuel wasted. I can run 70mph indicated and stay with traffic. When I ran the 'kooks which were 1% smaller than oem I had to run 75mph indicated to keep up with traffic. 75mph=3200rpms for me. 70mph -2900/3000rpms.

70mph for me is 2900-3000 rpm with stock size tires. 7500rpm is about 3200rpm, about the same as stock.

You've only changed your gear ratio by like 2%. hardly even noticeable.
^ lollll

RPM vs speed is ALWAYS the same unless you recalibrate the gear on the diff. where the speed sensor takes its reading or have a dead clutch.

He changed his final drive ratio 4%, it IS noticable, he was just saying that at the same REAL speed (not the speed indicated on the dash) he's a few hundred RPM lower, this means he's saving on fuel!

195/60/15 tires and stock trans = 70mph is calculated to 2980rpm
205/55/16 tires and stock trans = 70mph is calculated to 2900rpm

2.7% difference. not much to write home about guys.
he had smaller tires before, so his change IS 4%
you guys do what you want....post up when you do.

Actual measurements of the tires puts it a 3.8% as each tire is a little different in it's actual physical dimensions. But hey, you're right. What could I POSSIBLY know about ANYTHING. You, sir, must be God.

Ok bob, way to be a condescending dick. Tried to keep this a civilized conversation, but if you want to act like every other punk *** kid on this forum, way to go!

3-4-5% whatever, its negligible difference in the overall goal. You're talking about a difference of less than 100rpm. Turning the ac on or off will create a bigger difference.
