5th gear

Is there a taller 5th gear out there for us? I run 70mph on the interstate & that is 3000 rpm. If I had a taller 5th gear, I could run 2000 rpm & save a ton of gas.

I also searched for a swap with the 6 spd Tib box, but found nothing.

Thanks,

^what??? turning the ac only affects rpm at idle...not while your driving. and that is only because of the extra load on the motor.

and you dont think that extra load on the motor doesnt require extra engine speed?

I mean, if we're going to talk about negligible differences, we might as well include all of them.

All im saying is, if this works, its 10%-15% reduction of engine speed at cruising speed. I dont see why everyone is getting their panties in a wad over this. No one knows for sure if it will work or not, so just chill out till someone tries it.

In the overall goal of reducing engine speed while cruising, replacing a gear is the only viable option. Changing tires doesnt make a noticeable difference, and if you say it does, then it makes just as noticeable difference in reduction of performance at all speeds.
no a rotating mass will still turn at whatever rpms its at...it will take more power to do it though....

hence rpms stay the same while driving but the pedal doesnt do too much when you pressit down.

turn the ac off and its relieved....does he car instantly jump foward?? no
But that extra drag on the engine means the engine has to do more work to accomplish the same task. In effect, its the same difference.
This is why my new toy is a bicycle. I'm increasing my top end next month by buying a new crankset which will take my top end from 38 to 48 teeth in the front, an increase of more than 25%.

its different ok...but not the same!...
When I push the button to engage the AC, the car slows & I have to push the pedal down farther to keep up the same MPH. Does that not use more gas?

Oh, & did we ever figure out if we could change out 5th without removing the whole trans & was there a 5th gear out there that is taller?

yes a/c makes your mpg go down.

yes you can change 5th gear without pulling the trans. nobody knows if there is a direct swappable 5th gear.
I'll keep looking. I am also asking around on the Tiburon site. If I find one, I'll do it & put in a LSD, Phantom Grip probably.

correct....
ALSO. . . keep in mind you can go TOO far. When I had the 206/60's for 2 weeks, my mileage actually dropped a little because the engine was lugging too much up hills at highway speeds. It's a fine balance that can quickly be pushed too far.

I stand by my opinion on leaving the trans the F alone.

Are you really saying 4% difference in engine speed made the car struggle on hills?

How many tanks of gas did you run in 2 weeks?
2 tanks(AND A HALF), and 205/60/16's measured out to almost 7% difference in overall height. And yes, changing the final drive almost 7% does make a difference. The steeper hills almost needed a downshift at 65.

We ran a full tank out by the time we got it home the first day. Ran 2 more full tanks and a half tank.
(Hmm, my first reply disappeared)

Hi, I know this thread is a bit old, but it's the most informative that I've found on this topic anywhere on the Internet. I recovered a 97 Hyundai Elantra w/5-speed from the junk heap, and 5th is gone. It feels like there's nothing there. I tried manually pushing the arms on the transmission into where 5th gear would be, and it still wouldn't engage. I'm thinking that it's just gone/fell out. 1-4 and R work fine.

I have moderate mechanical experience, including motor rebuilds, but I've never done any MT work. From what I'm reading it sounds like I can simply pop the cover off the end and look to see if 5th is still there. Is that right? If 5th is destroyed/missing, should it just be as simple as pressing another 5th on? I'm hoping I can do this in the car with everything mounted, but I guess if I have to take the tranny out, so be it.

Also, did anyone have any luck finding a bigger 5th gear? (-: I can cruise at 20mph in 4th gear, so I'm guessing that 5th is probably going to be really low as well. A 6-speed swap sounds like fun, too, but this motor's torquey enough that I don't think it would really help much unless I did some tuning.

Thanks for your time! I hope I posted this in the right place. This is my first Hyundai, and even though it's a beaten up heap of junk scraps, I love it.

I know it's been a while, but I broke 100,000 miles the day before New Years, and will crack her open with some refund money in March. I don't have Quaife money, otherwise I would go that way, but I will probably drop in a Phantom Grip (now Traction Concepts) and see what happens. I will try some new 5th gears (and probably 4th) while I'm at it.

I don't want to change the ratio, because I like 1st - 3rd just like they are, but want a little taller 4th & 5th for gas mileage.
