I've been researching what to do about my wanting to get spacers/lowering problem, and I have seen a lot of people talk about fender flares. What I don't understand is, how does that help with rubbing? Yes it would make the fender stick out more, but it's still attached to the fender, and the fender is still under there, so wouldn't it still hit the actual fender?

those Golf flares are definitely not stick on... my brother used to rock a '92 Jetta GLi... he slammed it on 17x7.5s and ran 215 size tires... it rubbed-really rubbed the stock fenders so he ordered the big bumper kit with flares. he had to rivet the flares to the fenders and cut a lot of the fender off underneath the flares. to prevent rust, he bought some galvanizing spray from Autozone or somewhere and doused the cuts with several coats. never got any rust in those spots and the car looked awesome... it still rubbed though, but as they said in the VW community; "if you ain't rubbin' you ain't dubbin'". I wasn't aware they made these for the Elantra though...
