It is reported that there are heat waves over 120 degrees F in Australia and Brazil right now. In Queensland, Australia heat wave killed at least 100,000 bats. It's disaster for environment. It is said that a single bat can eat 3,000 mosquitoes overnight. Aussie members should prepare for rampant malaria and Denghi fever. In the mean time in the US, Chicago zoo kept polar bears indoors due to extreme cold temperature below -40 C, colder than the North Pole. Some northern states like North Dakota recorded -51 degrees C, windchill -70 degrees C. The Polar Vortex is to blame.

The heat here last weekend was ridiculous , it was 42ºC , the air conditioner in my house broke that day, Needless to say it was stinking hot inside it was a relief when it was fixed the next day , I have a large aquarium with some large fish, I nearly lost one that day from the heat, most of the weekend was spent trying to cool that.In some parts of Queensland it was 49-51ºC and the roads were melting!.I ride a motorcycle to work and on Saturday the wind while hitting me traveling down the highway was burning me....... The weather has cooled this week though :)

It is one hell of a stark contrast to what you guys are going through over there in Canada and USA, I've been following it on the news. Its amazing how different it can be on the same planet at the same time.

Stay safe Elantra XD family! :)

Paddy, plant shade trees around your home. They can lower your indoor temperature as much as 10 degrees and you can save energy and money, too. Also consider installing an attic fan. You climb your attic and measure temperature there when the outdoor temperature is 30F. It will be 50 F. What are the fast-growing trees in Australia? Be careful when you plant bamboos. They grow up to one meter per day and can spread to your neighbor like crazy.

We rent our house and the laws in australia are strict as hell as to what you can do to the property Unfortunately , and the local Council is retarded too , in some streets here on the gold coast I've heard of people painting their houses different colours and being forced by the council to change at back as it doesn't fit with the so called "street design". They often have problems with people planting trees in certain areas because of underground pipes etc.

Ive never heard of an attic fan though that sounds like a decent idea ...I may look into that :).. Thanks for the suggestion.

Here in the US, you are required to call 511 before you dig to verify any underground utility lines such as electric, telephone, cable, gas, water, sewer lines, etc. If you damage the lines, you have to pay for the damage.
The attic fan is very useful to help the house cool down. There are electric fans and whirlwind fans. I have an electric fan with thermostat and humidstat. The fan starts to run once the temperature reaches pre-set temperature or humidity and it runs even faster at a more higher set temperature and stops automatically when they drop below pre-set number. It uses little electricity. Whirlwind fans runs only when there is wind.
When the room temperature was 25C, the attic was already 40C. It can also lengthen the life of the roof, too. Actually, 30-year roof warranty is void if you don't have attic ventilation.

All of northern cali wasn't prepared for almost no rain this year, and they are hogging all of the water.
