my girl's car's got 42k miles and an auto.

lots of A/C usage due to summer heat. but after a full fill-up, it did only 118 miles when the guage is at the middle mark. are Elantra's fuel guage very accurate?

i just did the plugs, motor oil, reset computer...think the air filter was done last year.

what next....fuel filter? (where is it?) thanks.

might wanna try the fuel filter or o2, my o2 went bad and the gas milage suffered horribly, I would fill up and after just a day of driving the tank would be halfway gone.

I have been getting horrible mileage lately, It just threw a CEL for primary catalyst deficiency.

either means the exhaust manifold cat, I'll be letting the dealer poke around, it may be a defective manifold.

My Elantra's gotten horrible gas mileage ever since it was purchased brand new. If you're getting anything above 23-24 mpg and you live in a major metropolitan area, your car is probably normal. The Elantra is nowhere near as fuel efficient as the Corolla or Civic, but that's the price you pay for a car much cheaper than the other alternatives.

and our engines are bigger than most of theirs (corollas and civics) which are 1.7L or 1.8L

the fuel filter is under the car usually on the passenger side inline with the fuel line, it looks like a small canister/cylinder with an arrow pointing in the direction of fuel flow. I have never had to replace mine since I got it, but that general bit of knoledge always helps.

All the more reason to stick a CAI or SRI for the few extra mpgs. Also driving like an ass hat with the ac on drinks. Like 20mpg in my car. If I drive like a 90 yearold woman I get around 26 with ac on in town 29-30 with it off.

If your O2 sensor is defective the check engine light should be on. The Elantra isn't the most efficient vehicle in the world, especially with the automatic transmission. I'm able to get about 25mpg around town & about 35mpg on the highway but my Elantra is a 5 speed.

it depends what you mean by "city". new york/boston/LA, where you're sitting idling for hours at a time just to go a few miles, or most normal "small" cities, where it's a mix of stop lights and non-gridlocked streets. if i'm stuck in traffic and i spend a lot of time with the engine idling and the speedometer stuck at "0" mph much of the time, i'm going to avg around 18-19. in normal city traffic where you're "usually" in motion, i'll get around 25. on the highway, cruising easy, i get 32-33. when i mix all three types of driving, i'm seeing about 24-25 in the long term. i think this is absolutely normal.

fuel filter is on the fuel pump in the tank...

shawn :)

you must be talking about the sock filter on the fuel pump itself and not the easily serviced one that's outside of the gas tank.

but that sucks, i have to get under the car for it still.

No. i'm talking about the only fuel filter on the damn car.

What YOU are talking about it is a check valve that doesn't let pressurized fuel back into the tank.

The ONLY fuel FILTER is on the pump INSIDE THE TANK. want pics?

i'd like to see how this turns out, I could have sworn I saw the fuel filter on the car last time I was under it, going to check myself later on today.

The fuel filter is going to cause lack of power if anything, not bad gas mileage. If it's not letting much fuel through the lines, the how are you going to use more gas?

even though the Haynes book says there's one under the hood, there is no fuel filter under the hood on 01+... for the XD they moved it to the fuel tank.....

as for gas mileage...... make sure she's not driving like she stole it!!!
