How to remove a rounded drainplug

Take a wrench that it one milimeter smaller than what is required and beat the crap out of it, with a hammer, until it goes on, then you should be able to pull it off. Off course you should get new drain plugs. I used the round circle part of a wrench. You may also need a new wrench. According to Haynes, you should never use a socket wrench to remove a drain plug. This is probably why mine became rounded over time

You can also drill it out like they did with my wife's car at the shop. I blame walmart for rounding the drain plug here.

If you have to go to these lengths to get a drain plug off, I don't recommend getting another drain plug to replace it... buy one of these instead.
Thats one of those "why didn't I think of that" inventions. They should put these on all cars
how to remove a rounded drain plug?

i never recommend third class ways

Haynes manual are not a good reference.

I always use a socket wrench for the drain plug but I also don't over troque it! I also have the valve like Munky showed, very useful!!!
its only a quarter turn after its tight...thats it...just enough to squish the washer a little.
use Metrinch wrenches...even the rounded ones don't argue with them.
good old punch and hammer trick works everytime and doesnt wreck your tools
Use a smaller 6 point socket, and hammer the hell out of it to get it to go on the plug. Works for me all the time.
use a metric one ;)
use a pair of locking pliers
That is what I originally tried, it just rounds even more.

Cypher, I have an 01 Elantra with 148K, but the transmission has been replaced through a service warranty.
