its in..

i still have 3 things left to do.

the steering rack needs to get bolted in and to the steering column.

And I bolted up the starter and tried to start the car. sounded horrible. I come to find out the m/t and a/t starters are different? Looks like I'm going to spend 125 dollars of money I don't have to get a m/t one because I never pulled it off the junk car. :( :(

I also have to work out the wiring for the starter circuit. I jumped 2 wires that I thought i needed to jump (power to the line that senses if the car is in P or N) and when the key was in the on position the starter was going. So I need to tap into a "power when crank" wire (somewhere???) in the engine bay and then I'll be good to go with that..

I worked on it for 2 hours last night on my lift, and today I started bright and early at 745, worked straight until a 15 minute lunch brake at 130, and then worked straight until 830pm. I've had a long day and it's not even done yet and will probably end up costing me 125 bucks for a M/T starter

soo

why did you **** with the steering components again?

To drop the subframe, the steering rack comes with it. I followed the workshop manual removal and installation instructions.

Also the ECU/TCU is a single component according to the wiring diagrams manual, referred to as the "PCM" I need to get one that is for an 05+, No ABS or Trac. I can drive it without the manual ECU, it will just throw codes for the input shaft sensor, output shaft sensor, relay shift solenoids, etc etc...

I'm gonna edit my post and post up pictures in a minute...

pictures...

Subframe laying on the ground w/ steering rack attached

Transmission to the right, engine to the left

Picture of the automatic transmission's flexplate + washer (m/t does not use the washer)

Great I dont think you can, I think that is why I am having the grinding issue... I just called Hyundai and they siad the Autos have a thing in there but they think (sounds very reissuring lol) the flywheel just bolts to the motor.

the flywheel bolts to the motor. that flexplate this composed of 2 peices. the + looking thing and a washer. remove BOTH before installing flywheel. Make sure the starter you are using is from a manual tranmission.

UPDATE:

I got the steering rack all bolted up, rolled it out of my bay and popped the clutch :D :D :D :D

It works good. But that CEL is nice and bright and I don't have a speedo. I think my hack job on the pass. side ABS sensor got me (ie. what happened to evan)

Hopefully when I get the m/t starter on friday, i can just bolt it up and go ! (if not i'll be rolling it down hills to get it started for a while)

ahhhhh you took the whole subframe off! when I drop it I only do it on one side and you can take the tranny off if you loosen the other side.

take a look at how big the A/T is in that one picture. When I was pulling it off the engine, it was halfway into the driver side wheel well before it came off.

Trust me, to get an a/t off this car, the subframe has to be removed. :)

i wasnt doubting the validity of this thread, i just wanted to see if the interior was hacked up any from having to swap all that stuff in.

how'd the pedals go in? ok??
I had to drill through 2 layers of sheet metal of the firewall for the pedals. I did it months ago. That was definately the worst part of the entire swap.

So what was the final bankroll for this swap? =P ...considering labor was on you.
Donor 2001 Elantra = $140 bought, $135 to tow it
New Transmission because donor's got f'ed up (read: destroyed in donor car's accident) = $450
New Throw out bearing = $42
Resurface flywheel = $30
Manual Trans Fluid = Don't remember

I'm sure there is a bunch of other things I don't remember.
I still have to buy a gauge cluster, a manual transmission ECU, and interior shifter boot and m/t center console trim.

are those Tiburon Seats?
yes, but I have an aig bag light because the 05 aig bag wiring system is completely different :( My next project is to solder in the old connectors and resistors to make the system happy again ;)

what'd you know... keyan can do something right
uhh....thanks?

Jim, Get a GT cluster and Harness add the trip Button and voila.
I am done hacking up the car.

All I really want to do is put a phantom grip in it, get a new ecu and gls gauge cluster, and call the car done until I save for a turbo kit.

curious, how did you work it out that you were able to work on your car at work (which is where im assuming you did it)...did you have a couple days off and you did it then?
Tuesday is my day off, I did 99% of the swap in a day. Then on wednesday I used someone else's lift until after work, bolted the steering rack in, poped the clutch and drove it outside, and then a couple days later the starter came in...drove it in during work hours when no one was looking and put it together :D

Alright, I got the speedometer, and the backup lights working. The wiring is very simple. On the plus side the R on the instrument cluster lights up when you put it in reverse :D On the negative side I still have a check engine light, which I will have until I get a manual transmission ECU.

How much did it cost total?

Parts Car $150 + $135 towed to my house
3 weeks taking my time removing everything manual from the car
New transmission $450
16 hours shop labor
Starter $95

UPDATE !!

I got my manual instrument gauge cluster in the mail today. Bolted right in and works fine, and the milage isn't off that much either ! (bought off ebay) my only gripe is that its all GREEEEENNNN...(i had my other gauges converted to red LOL time to buy some LEDs from www.autolumination.com !)

All that's left is to get the manual ECU and clean up the wires in the engine bay.

if you don't have a donor car, don't even attempt it. there are so many little nuts bolts and washers you need, that are different on the A/T its not even funny.

that list you quoted is just about everything.

trans, linkage, linkage cables, m/c, s/c, clutch pedal, brake pedal, clutch lines, flywheel, flywheel bolts, pp, clutch, pp bolts, throw out bearing, tob fork, tob fork bushings, trans bolts, axles, manual ecu, gauge cluster..
