my transmission swap

its in..

i still have 3 things left to do.

the steering rack needs to get bolted in and to the steering column.

And I bolted up the starter and tried to start the car. sounded horrible. I come to find out the m/t and a/t starters are different? Looks like I'm going to spend 125 dollars of money I don't have to get a m/t one because I never pulled it off the junk car. :( :(

I also have to work out the wiring for the starter circuit. I jumped 2 wires that I thought i needed to jump (power to the line that senses if the car is in P or N) and when the key was in the on position the starter was going. So I need to tap into a "power when crank" wire (somewhere???) in the engine bay and then I'll be good to go with that..

I worked on it for 2 hours last night on my lift, and today I started bright and early at 745, worked straight until a 15 minute lunch brake at 130, and then worked straight until 830pm. I've had a long day and it's not even done yet and will probably end up costing me 125 bucks for a M/T starter

Jim, Get a GT cluster and Harness add the trip Button and voila.
I am done hacking up the car.

All I really want to do is put a phantom grip in it, get a new ecu and gls gauge cluster, and call the car done until I save for a turbo kit.

curious, how did you work it out that you were able to work on your car at work (which is where im assuming you did it)...did you have a couple days off and you did it then?

Tuesday is my day off, I did 99% of the swap in a day. Then on wednesday I used someone else's lift until after work, bolted the steering rack in, poped the clutch and drove it outside, and then a couple days later the starter came in...drove it in during work hours when no one was looking and put it together :D
Alright, I got the speedometer, and the backup lights working. The wiring is very simple. On the plus side the R on the instrument cluster lights up when you put it in reverse :D On the negative side I still have a check engine light, which I will have until I get a manual transmission ECU.
awsome, congrats on your progress, i cantwait tp se it in persoon :)
i got to ask total how much did it all cost you putting it in?
How much did it cost total?

Parts Car $150 + $135 towed to my house
3 weeks taking my time removing everything manual from the car
New transmission $450
16 hours shop labor
Starter $95

UPDATE !!

I got my manual instrument gauge cluster in the mail today. Bolted right in and works fine, and the milage isn't off that much either ! (bought off ebay) my only gripe is that its all GREEEEENNNN...(i had my other gauges converted to red LOL time to buy some LEDs from www.autolumination.com !)

All that's left is to get the manual ECU and clean up the wires in the engine bay.

Ordered a manual ECU off ebay today.

Updates to come.
where do you find parts cars for that cheap? I want a few of those!
Reading this post makes me feel that I should swap ma A/T for M/T. Thanks for the inspiration Keyan.
hey keyan. would u be able to PM me a slightly more detailed list of all the parts needed??? if u have some free time, please.
Ya I regret buying an Auto now. Hey your not that far do mine next. :) BOB
ha, i already asked him when i wanted to do mine... he said hell never do it again. rofl
i feel sorry for you guys who think swapping transmissions is best, a/t might be "boring" but the m/t's have problems with second gear and with 1st and reverse sometimes, and uhh ha, not to mention the crankshafts are different between the automatic and manual motors, the centers are different sizes around. lol..

:abovelol:

M/T's having problems? really? I've NEVER had a problem with mine, not a single one. And the people which had the 2nd gear grind problem fixed it just by changing thei trans oil.
