my transmission swap

its in..

i still have 3 things left to do.

the steering rack needs to get bolted in and to the steering column.

And I bolted up the starter and tried to start the car. sounded horrible. I come to find out the m/t and a/t starters are different? Looks like I'm going to spend 125 dollars of money I don't have to get a m/t one because I never pulled it off the junk car. :( :(

I also have to work out the wiring for the starter circuit. I jumped 2 wires that I thought i needed to jump (power to the line that senses if the car is in P or N) and when the key was in the on position the starter was going. So I need to tap into a "power when crank" wire (somewhere???) in the engine bay and then I'll be good to go with that..

I worked on it for 2 hours last night on my lift, and today I started bright and early at 745, worked straight until a 15 minute lunch brake at 130, and then worked straight until 830pm. I've had a long day and it's not even done yet and will probably end up costing me 125 bucks for a M/T starter

M/T's having problems? really? I've NEVER had a problem with mine, not a single one. And the people which had the 2nd gear grind problem fixed it just by changing thei trans oil.
really?? because ive had to spend 278 bucks on internal M/t parts, and ive had to rebuild a few of them, only problems ive seen from the a/t is the torque converters going out, and the clutches slipping slightly during hard shifts which is fixed with a can of shift conditioner :)

I dont see why the need of the rebuild, eitheir abused or bad maintened transmissions. There are members over here that are close to 300k miles on their original m/t trans, without having to rebuild/fix them. Regular maintenance is the key.

regular maintenance doesnt mean s*** when you drop the clutch at 6k rpms and boil the tires often....have you seen someone break an axel on this site? hmm, ive broken 3 of them....2 pass; 1 drivers:rolleyes: not to mention....hard shifts into 2nd and 3rd while racing have been the death of two M/t's ive had to use, ive even popped the shifter clips off from shifting too hard -_-
amen.
maintenance is Vital.

auto...better?..

haha...

hhahhahaa..

both the m/t and a/t have their own sets pf problems, but the m/t has more which in my eyes makes it a bigger POS:abovelol:

Wrong. I've put Redline MT-90 in my tranny 3 seperate times, and guess what? My 2nd gear still grinds.

Transmission fluid doesn't rebuild synchros. ;)

its not even real transmission fluid....lawlercakes

i know guys who run 10W30 motor oil and synchromesh2 transfer case fluid
Are you boosted or something? How are you beating up your trannys that bad?

factory freak elantra, thats all ive been able to conclude about it......

i mean, what else could explain why an elantra with just CAI and exhaust mods would rip through m/t shift gears and snap axles...........
Sounds like a code 18. I have 138k on my trans and its seen its share of abuse. Track runs, teenage driving, dyno, and its still going strong. I am convinced that one day I'm going to blow it up but so far its holding fine.

the 02 had 186k when i sold it, but i had rebuilt the transmission at 145k, after dealing with no 2nd gear since 110k when i had replaced the gears the past time..

at 40k i broke both axles at the same time while being an idiot and racing a truck that i had no chance of beating. replaced clutch with an AC Delco replacement at 120k. changed the brakes and rotors at 100k, had to put a different bottom end in the car at 120k, when i lost second gear the motor started to knock from a spun rod bearing, and i drove it 10k while it knocked like a beast. then at 160k the second bottom end had given way, and i built one from bottom up, but silly me got high and didnt put hoses on the end of the rod bolts, scarred a rod journal on the crank, that motor was pulled out the next day :( put a used motor in it and sold it to my buddy for 3g's at 186k. he dogged it out and ended up making the engine/trans tick very badly, so i swapped a 2001 engine and 5spd trans into it from a parts car he had bought for 600bucks.......

my whole family has elantras too, aunt has a 02 gt hatchback 5spd that ive done work to, i just got my grandmothers 03 midnight gray elantra when she passed a few weeks back, and my mom has one of those turd gold 04's....

hers is a lemon, its had a gremlin in it since she bought it :wtf:
ive put 2 diff transmissions in it, and the dealership had put 3 in it while it was under warranty, and everytime it would still shift really hard, and sometimes not shift at all.....this last transmission was full of water at a junkyard, i drained it, put fluid in it, drove 5miles, did a trans flush, drove another 5 miles, flushed it again, and then put shift conditioner in the fluid....no probs since :)

Badlucks or something, i didn't have any gremlins, nothing to fix except for maintenance(brakes at 70k, clucth at 75k) And it had its part of beating... huge beating.

most of the miles on that car was driving 70miles to work everyday, and owning a pool business and using it as the cleaning vehicle...if you poke your head in the trunk you can still smell the chemicals i carried around in it :D

quick question for everyone.....whats the fastest you have had your elantras??
This is not a thread to discuss your reckless pursuit to see how fast the car will go, this thread is for swapping from automatic to manual. Please keep it to that.
Donor 2001 Elantra = $140 bought, $135 to tow it
New Transmission because donor's got f'ed up (read: destroyed in donor car's accident) = $450
New Throw out bearing = $42
Resurface flywheel = $30
Manual Trans Fluid = Don't remember

I'm sure there is a bunch of other things I don't remember.
I still have to buy a gauge cluster, a manual transmission ECU, and interior shifter boot and m/t center console trim.

im doing this too...

keyan can you please guide me through what needs to be bought??

please greatly appreciated:bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:
if you don't have a donor car, don't even attempt it. there are so many little nuts bolts and washers you need, that are different on the A/T its not even funny.

that list you quoted is just about everything.

trans, linkage, linkage cables, m/c, s/c, clutch pedal, brake pedal, clutch lines, flywheel, flywheel bolts, pp, clutch, pp bolts, throw out bearing, tob fork, tob fork bushings, trans bolts, axles, manual ecu, gauge cluster..
i will find one!!!

lol

:)sorry im just like really excited and im not gonna let you be the only one who had all the fun.

ok back to reality..

ya im pretty sure i can get a donor car.

hopefully ill have the money i need and everything ready to go around january, if not sooner.

overall, was it (the labor and time and money) worth it to you?
