Wifey wants to go on a vacation this year, but we need some ideas.

She was thinking of Yellowstone park and Mt Rushmore. I was thinking of either Boston or San Fransisco or maybe Victoria, BC. Another idea was Disney "California Adventure". I heard it was a more adult themed park.

Were into Historical stuff ... last trip was to Lynchburg, VA where we did the local scene ... Monticello - Jefferson's place, Natural Bridge, The Poplar Forest and then to Alexandria and Washington DC. Saw the Smithsonian and all the monuments ... very cool, especially the Museum of Science. Did the walking tour of old town Alexandria which was amazing ...

So, I decided to ask this bunch of odd balls to see what they can come up with. We want it about 5 days long, something we can do at our own pace. No cruises ... been there done that. No sport themed ones ... were to lazy for that , just a low keyed, self paced thing that we can chose and pick what to do each day. Thats what I liked about DC, so much to see.

So give me some ideas ...

Cancun Mexico, best vacation me and the wife have ever gone to, the water is so clear and so blue, it was paradise, and the hotel we where in had 3 different all you can eat all inclusive restaurants that had a different theme every day, so much stuff to do there too. we staid 7 days there visited 2 other islands, got drunk every night at the hotel bar, went snorkeling, visited xcaret wich is a must visit place, so much fun, cost us about $2g's on the whole trip for both of us.

Boston and San Francisco are very cool places to go.

Im more of a camping/sit out in the woods for a week vacationer than a tourist type. Moving around, seeing a bunch of stuff is fun, but not very relaxing.

Well for the historical and relaxing aspect: Hot Springs, Arkansas. There's also stuff to do in the surrounding area. When you go there you really do feel things slow down.

Went there for my spring break 08 spent a couple days at the spas (massages, mineral baths, etc), drove the back roads, and spent some time with my family.

Sounds good, but dealing with all the air travel, passports, customs, ect, id rather just drive 2hrs out into the middle of no where, stop off at some hick grocery store, stock up for a week and just hang out without a worry in the world. Go home when Im ready.

No cell phones, no traffic, no fast food restaurants, no computers. Just trees, a lake, and a camp fire. Cant wait for spring.

las vegas, there's so much other stuff around there, and you can get a vacation trip there cheap just because of the casinos even if you never drop a dime gambling. some POI

Moab, UT about 7 hours drive.
Grand Canyon about 5 hours.
Boulder Beach Campground - about 45 minutes
Lake Havasu- about 2.5 hours.

If you have a week, there's a few options for "day trips" although Moab might be something to stay overnight, but that's one of the things on my "see before I die" list.

a couple of buddy's and I where planning taking a 3 day trip to yosemite park some time soon, take a raft on the lake, go fishing , camp in the woods, just go exploring the wilderness there, hopefully we don't get chased by a bear or end up without a paddle.

If you want to go to San Fran, Yosemite National Park (like matrixloader brought up) is around 3-3.5 hrs away. It's not exactly like Yellowstone, but you'll get San Fran and the wife will get a National Park experience. Good way to compromise if you ask me.

Isn't it a total ripoff that they charge you for the Natural Bridge? Seriously... but, I guess then when you came up here to DC and everything was free it was better.

I agree, Cancun (or actually anywhere along the Yucatan) is a nice trip. That's more of a getaway than a site-see/historic type of deal that you seem interested in.

NYC has a lot of cool stuff to see and do. That's a thought.

You could go to the Hyundai Plant in AL then drive down to Florida for some cricket... wait, that's what I'm going to do in a couple months.

We like to go to North Carolina and the Smokey Mountains. We usually rent a cabin and just hang out. Cell phones don't work and most of the cabins don't have internet, phones, or TV's. We even stayed at one that had a wood burning hot tub. We stay in the Franklin area. There are a lot of things to do a round there and the people are really nice. Took me a little while to get used to people that actually stop for red lights.

If you like that area, head a little north to Robinsville if you havent already. I love that area. Little more crowded due to the great roads, Dragon/Cheohala, ect, but there's a great camp ground Ive stayed at a few times thats really nice.

st. augustine beach FL is great. very historical, but also has a lot of more modern stuff to do. we went end of july last year and loved it

We have stayed in Asheville too. Anywhere in that area is usually nice.

Dillsboro is nice to go, you can do a nice train ride. Cherokee is cool too.

I will see if I can find some info on where we have stayed. We usually don't stay in the same cabin more than once.

Florida is sounding good and I'd like to go back to the Cayman Islands ... but we don't have passports. We have the Enhanced Drivers License, but thats only good for Canada.

Keep'em coming ... has anyone gone to Puerto Rico? What about Eastern Canada?

If you do come to Florida, there is a beach on the west coast called caladesi island. You have to take a ferry to it and it is only open in the day. Was recently named the number one beach in America. Haven't been myself, but it looks nice. Also, the keys are always a great option.
