It's normal for cars to idle a bit high when they have just been started.

Thats exactly what it is.

At my work we put in Aux idle controllers on the diesels that do it to a way more extreme level. It helps to warm the engine up quicker, and helps them last longer.

I was just using that as an example, there are other reasons for the high idle in deisels also. I wasn't saying that XDs have it just because thats what they do in deisels, or even saying that they were anyhting alike.

But serisoly, it does help get everything lubed and warm.

It's probably to heat up the cats faster, so they start working sooner, all in the name of emissions reduction, my 2004 does the exact same thing.
