Well I plugged in my OBDII reader for fun today, not really looking for anything other than to see when the ECU switches into open loop.

Anyways, I decided to check for codes while I was there. I had (and have) no CEL on. However it does have a code stored in there, P0705. From doing some reading symptoms of this are late or hard engagements into drive or reverse. I don't have any of these problems. The only time I get a stiffer shift out of park is when the car is parked on a hill. Otherwise the thing shifts pretty well, only other issue is when it's cold out, the shift into third is a little harsher. The transmission has 187k miles on it though, so it's not exactly new.

I cleared the code, and a few seconds later it came back. Cleared it again and sure enough, a few seconds it appeared back. Still with no CEL though.

What exactly is the cause of this code, and what do I need to get rid of it?

P0705 - Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Malfunction

On top of the tranny, by the selector lever, there is the range switch. Disconnect, clean terminals, add some dielectric grease to the terminals, and reconnect. Disconnect negative battery terminal for 30+ sec., reconnect terminal, drive car and see if MIL come on again.
