Are there any aftermarket tail lights available for the Elantra XD?
No, there are no full replacement tail lights available for the Elantra XD. No "euro" tails. No "altezzas." No APC 3D tails.
Are they any aftermarket options at all for the tail lights?
Yes, for the sedan. DreamKA4U and kSpec both sell MAGI brand darkened tail light covers for the 2001-2003 Elantra (they may work for the 2003 if you replace the whole lens, as they will not fit directly over the 2004 tails).
They come with some double sided tape for sticking them on. The "wrinkles" you see on them is some protective film that I haven't taken off yet because I'm lazy and haven't decided to install them yet.
They are designed to go over the existing tail lights. Here are some pics.
Some people have decided to go for a cleaner (more illegal look). Using this method you can get rid of the existing tail light lens and replace it with the new MAGI lenses. This method is more work (breaking/taking of the lens, slightly shaving down the MAGI lenses so they fit flush as they are bigger since they are designed to sit overtop of the taillight).
Can XD (2001-2003) tail lights fit on the XD2 (2004+)? And vice versa?
Yes, for the hatch. The design of the hatch and rear bumper did not change, therefore the shape of the tail lights is the same. It's an easy swap.
Possibly, for the sedan. The design of the trunk changed slightly. Check out this thread for more information and thoughts. It looks like the answer is no, or at least without modifications. Check out this thread for more up to date info.
