I wanted to thank everyone on here for the helpful DIY to the timing belt job, I was able to get this done in day with help from a friend. I replaced all 4 belts, along with the timing belt tensioner and idler pulley. I'm far from a mechanic but if you can turn a wrench you can do this job.

The hardest problems with this job for me was: getting the idler pulley off, getting the old water pump gasket off, and turning the crankshaft bolt 720 degrees to check timing. I recommend taking out the passenger side headlight assembly out, that really helped with having extra space reaching things.

Don't forget to tighten the water pump pulley bolts on after the new belts are on.
Don't forget to tighten the lower alternator pivot bolt.

Hi, I've noticed some timing belt kits (including the pulleys). My elantra due a timing belt change but I wonder why do I have to chance the pulleys instead of changing the belt and the water pump only? can someone give me some light on this issue?

Regards.

You are not changing the pulley. Just temorarily remove the water pump pulley to gain access to timing belt and water pump. You need to loosen the 4 bolts before releasing the tension of the belts and removing the belt. Then jack up the oil pan. Otherwise, it is very very difficult to remove the pulley. Don't waste time to remove the passenger side headlight. It's totally unnecessary.

Like danielelee already said you aren't changing the major pulleys. But the Gates timing belt kit I used came with a new idler pulley and timing belt tensioner which are used with the timing belt. Its a good idea to change those out sense they come with the kit anyway, along with the water pump. But, in order to get down there you will need to take off the crankshaft pulley, waterpump pulley, and power steering pump pulley. The DIY on here explains it all.

You don't need to remove p/s pulley. Just move the pump to the side. Hyundai dealers recommend to change the water pump every other time when you change t/b.
Thanks for the correction, I didn't mean the power steering pump pulley. As you can see from the photos I didn't remove that, I meant the second pulley behind the water pump which connects to the power steering assembly. And I second changing the water pump, doesn't make sense not to its only about $30 more dollars and your going to be down there anyway.
