Would you work overtime for free?

So this week (Monday-Sunday) I worked about 79 hours and it made me think about whether or not any of you would work about 35 extra hours a week without getting paid overtime? That's right, I worked all the extra hours for nothing. On top of that, I'm going to work this week with no days off until my regular Saturday and Sunday off. That's twelve days in a row.

So, would you work overtime for free?

^so i take it you are a teacher from that remark? what level of schooling? i want to either be a high school english teacher, or college professor (im shooting for at least a masters)
nope he works in psychology or something last time i heard

I'm on salary, and routinely work >40 hrs/wk without extra pay.
heck no.... thats why I like hourly pay....
overtime and free don't belong together
I will only work that lot of free time with a salary of 70k + a year. No less. No one can make the rich richer without a price (otherwise it will be slavery :bondage: ).

You work that hard for free only for your parents, sons or a real friend in a real trouble (if you can solve it).
Im in the military, but If I had my choice, then no.
This thread is why all of you guys only drive Elantras, hahahaha, just kidding.

I've always been a hard worker, back when I used to work at the grocery store I'd try my best to help each customer load their groceries into their car. The other guys used to make fun of me for running back and forth, haha, making $5.15 an hour I had to try my best to get tips.

Well

1. you drive an Elantra as well!! haha
2. working overtime for free isn't going to help you afford a more expensive car!
:abovelol:
My brother used to work for free a little too often. I worked for the same company. That was a pitfall of being on salary, but more specifically it was this company's fault. But fortunately being a programmer I'm not needed at odd hours like IT guys such as my brother are.

With my new job I'm paid hourly. So I'm liking that. I answered no, I would not work overtime for free.

We should all be grateful that James works overtime for free or else he wouldn't be running an Elantra forum!!!
I worked an overnight, rotating shift. 12 hours at a time. Every other week there was built in overtime so you got 20+ hours of time and a half built in to your pay. The base was great so I was making really good money. That was hourly though. I believe that if you accept a position as a salary employee, you can expect to work until the job is done. You are telling that company that they can pay you x amount to do a job for a year, not nec. how many hours you will work each week. On the other hand...if those raises or at least the thing that most working people want, gratitude, don't come along....Have yourself an interview or two elsewhere
Salaried as well so free over time is part of the job. I stay an extra 45 mins extra per day average.

i hear ya there...it sucked wakin up at 4 to go in at 5 and not get done till about 1 or 2 am...
At my job we had this one guy work 50+ hours a week and only get paid for 40. He only did all that because he wanted everything to be right. Now he's been promoted to management.
^^ there you go

though it's useless for super to do that since hes already in management LOL

I am on salary, so this is for free...

Fall of 2005, I worked 107 days straight without a day off.

I regularly work 60+ hours a week, in fact last payroll (we get paid every 2 weeks), I had around 146 hrs. My salary paid for 80 of that.

For no reason I can think of is this a good practice. Just my .02
I only plan on working free is if it's on my car in my shop.

Unless it's something I really love and and good friends with everyone.
My company just looks at me as a number, it doesn't matter how good I work or if I work overtime (which I don't, as someone said earlier, My time in valueable to me).

When it comes time to axe people they look at areas and not indivduals. That's the life of a Global Corporation. But the time I give at work is my best and it is recognized by the client enough that they are now requesting I spend my whole week there instead of 1 day.

**edit** I'm on salary as well, so there is no chance of being paid for overtime. Once my 8 hrs are up, it's out the door I go for a nice long commute home to my wife and kids.
