What does "pressing the brake rotors" mean?

Hello all.

I called around today to ask how much it would cost to have the rotor and pads for the front passenger side of my Elantra (2005, GLS) replaced (long story) today, and was told that the cost would depend on whether the rotor needed "pressed" or not. It's a new brake rotor, so I was under the impression that all they had to do was put it on, and have never heard of "pressing a rotor." Can anyone explain what "pressing" a brake rotor means?

They probably mean "turning" the rotor which refers to machining a used rotor so it can be reused with a new set of pads.

Changing pads or a rotor on one side of the car is not really a good idea. The car can pull to one side if different brands of pads are used . Most of the braking power is in the front brakes of a car.

I thought that he meant "turning" the rotor at first too, but he quoted me a price of $150 if the rotor was pressed and $40 if it wasn't (I should have mentioned that), so it didn't make any sense, since any shop should only be charging $10-20 to turn a rotor. I think it's possible that he meant if the rotor was pressed on to the car itself, and I've heard that some earlier Hyundais had pressed on rotors, but I have no idea (hence my question).

As for the rotor on the one side of the car, I know, you're right, it actually bothers me a little bit to have it done like that. I want to just buy the parts and do both sides myself, but it's not my car, and the title holder (my Mom) is insisting on getting it done in a shop to avoid "liability issues" (seriously).

I don't have the money to pay a mechanic to put on rotors and pads on both sides of the car, so I have to just get the one done and hope there aren't any problems. If it does start pulling to the side, I may have to bite the bullet and pay them to do the other side too.

ya.. captive rotors... where the rotor is BEHIND the hub.... SUCK!!! ive done those before!! i hate them... i even have a $380 "hub tamer" kit i bought to make the job way easier.. Why did manufacters even do that in the first place idk?
last time i thought... some old hundais and honda accords (early 90's) only did that?.......

dude you really dont want to do one side only. are you sure the rotors cant wait. can you get away with just the pads on both sides. If you need rotors on a 2005, you may want to seriously rethink your driving habits.
